The company Münchener Rück was founded in Munich in 1880 and rapidly grew into one of the world’s leading reinsurers. Meanwhile renamed Munich Re, it has remained a leading international provider of reinsurance coverage until today. The company’s recipe for success: Employees who view change as an opportunity, manage risks and are the very best in their particular fields.

What exactly is reinsurance? To put it simply: Reinsurers insure insurance companies. They take on large-scale risks from customers who are unable or unwilling to carry them on their own. Risks therefore naturally play a key role at Munich Re, because adequate assessment and reinsurance are only possible after intensive examination. Natural catastrophes, cyber crime, the demographic shift and new technologies are just a handful of the topics handled by Munich Re.

The company is even active in space, employing rocket scientists and offering insurance policies for the aerospace industry. One example is a state-of-the-art insurance solution with end-of-life coverage for satellites.

Tradition, art and values

Munich Re attaches great importance to a pleasant working environment. That’s why, right from the start, the company has always sought to integrate works of art into the world of work and to promote contemporary art. Clients and guests visiting the company’s business offices are welcomed by works of art from all over the world. And it doesn’t end there: Employees can borrow photographs, paintings, sculptures and graphics for their workplace from the in-house art library.

This culture also encompasses personal development of employees and orientation to values such as sustainability, responsibility and mutual respect.

The high road to Munich Re: the International Trainee Program

Trainees in Munich Re’s International Trainee Program receive intensive training over a 24-month period. Initial training takes place on the job in the trainees’ respective department. The trainees then work in neighboring departments to strengthen their understanding of processes and become even more closely acquainted with Munich Re. Also included in the program is a three-month stay abroad. This helps trainees to quickly establish their own international networks in locations such as London, Milan, Princeton, Johannesburg, Sydney, Hong Kong, Seoul, Beijing, Tokyo or Singapore. They receive intensive training in tasks related to Munich Re’s core business and work as risk underwriters or in claims management to help familiarize themselves with the company’s diverse activities.

What’s more, trainees at Munich Re also go through three off-the-job modules in which they gain specialist knowledge about reinsurance together with colleagues from all over the world and attend soft skill training classes. This part takes place in Munich and Princeton and is conveyed using a variety of learning methods such as workshops, seminars, case studies and training classes.

By the way: All trainees at Munich Re receive permanent contracts. This means your entry into the company is guaranteed after you complete the trainee program!
